COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kevin Coleman and Tatiana Stone direct Bellingham SeaFeast, an event that connects the community with Whatcom County's maritime history and will offer a VIP experience, onsite dishwashing for vendors, a 5K Pirate Run, and live music on Sept. 27 and 28. They have built year-round programs focused on community, sustainable seafood, ocean conservation, and maritime heritage.  KAFE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Whatcom County’s jobless rate rose slightly in August to 4.6% from July, though it was lower than 4.8% last August—Skagit County showed a similar trend—state data shows.  KISM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lynden School Board approved an open letter today urging community support for a $129M bond that will fund a new high school—along with upgrades to athletic and performing arts facilities—if voters reach a 60% threshold on Nov. 4.  Lynden Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Whatcom County Council received an independent report on its sexual harassment policy following lawsuits against the former Public Works Director. The Matrix Consulting study found that while current training is solid—improvements like standardized protocols are needed to better support employees.  My Bellingham Now
  • The county released an independent report on its sexual harassment policy following lawsuits against the former Public Works Director. Alan Pennington from Matrix Consulting presented the report to the Whatcom County Council on Tuesday—finding that while training is solid, many employees, especially women, feel they lack support when they speak up.  KISM
  • Whatcom County received roughly $1.5 million in state funds for six projects including upgrading a school’s football field, installing a new connector for parks, and buying nearly 40 acres near Acme to link other county parks. The county’s Parks and Recreation Department got the largest grant—its purchase will support a future trailhead connecting Nesset Farm and South Fork Park.  KISM

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Mariners clinched a playoff spot by beating the Rockies and will try to win their first AL West title since 2001 tonight if the Rockies lose—while the Seahawks prepare for a divisional matchup tomorrow on TNF as former star Sherman receives deferred prosecution for his DUI charge. The Nooksack Valley School District will upgrade its athletics field with artificial turf by the end of 2027 after receiving a $386,000 grant from the state Recreation and Conservation Office.  KISM
  • The Mariners clinched a postseason berth with a 4-3 win over the Rockies and have a chance at their first AL West title if they win tonight—Seattle updates note that Bryan Woo will miss his start due to pectoral tightness and Richard Sherman received deferred prosecution as the Seahawks prepare to play the Cardinals tomorrow. The Nooksack Valley School District will convert its athletic field to artificial turf by the end of 2027—a change set ahead of Friday Night Lights games.  My Bellingham Now
