GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Public Works recommended lowering speed limits on many roads after reviewing collision data and nearby structures—downtown streets would be set at 20 mph while main thoroughfares like Alabama and Lakeway Drives would see reductions, and changes could be approved as early as 2026.  KAFE
  • The Ferndale City Council voted 5-2 on Monday to oppose a citizen initiative on the November ballot that would ban junk fees for renters—citing concerns that small landlords may struggle with maintenance and safety needs. Council member Ryan O’Larey said local input favored leaving the decision to the voters, and the initiative will appear on the ballot along with city council races.  KAFE
  • The Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial honors two Lynden officers who died in the line of duty — it serves as a permanent tribute following WSLEM criteria.  Lynden Tribune
  • City council approved a new one-tenth percent sales tax that will take effect on Jan. 1st—adding a dime to every $100 purchase to fund public safety services and help prevent cuts to city jobs; the tax is expected to generate nearly $4 million to reduce a $10 million budget gap.  KAFE

  • Whatcom County Health and Community Services warns residents not to eat Hello Fresh meals containing spinach that may be contaminated with Listeria—customers with Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta or Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey should discard or return them immediately as no adverse reactions have been reported.  My Bellingham Now
  • Lummi Nation Health Center warned the community after multiple overdoses over the weekend required extra breathing support when Narcan alone was ineffective—preliminary tests found dangerous drugs like carfentanil and xylazine in the supply.  My Bellingham Now

  • Mariners Game 3 in Detroit is delayed until 4 pm on KPUG due to a rain delay — Logan Gilbert will take the mound and first baseman Josh Naylor has returned after his personal leave. A former Mariners prospect was hospitalized after a motorcycle accident, the Bengals traded for Joe Flacco to add depth at quarterback, and the NHL season is underway with the Kraken set to debut under new coach Lane Lambert — additional game details remain pending.  KISM
