COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A local non-profit announced that its co-founder and Executive Director, Derek Long, will resign at the end of October—after nearly 24 years of service expanding the organization within Whatcom County. The board will decide next steps for leadership in the coming weeks. KISM
- ➤ Bill Davis is a Hall of Fame broadcaster who began his 50-year radio career in Texas and moved to Bellingham in 2005 to work at a local station on Yew Street Road — he now hosts his midday show on KAFE 104.1 and weekend programs on KGMI. KISM
- ➤ Local emergency officials are calling on residents to join the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill at 10:16 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 — the exercise teaches safe actions such as drop, cover and hold on and explains what to do if in a vehicle or near water. KISM
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The Port of Bellingham has released a state-funded plan to boost Point Roberts' economy by acquiring and revitalizing the marina—expanding broadband, upgrading the sewer system and launching a Resilience Hub for small businesses. Port staff will present the plan to a local advisory committee on Oct 16 before they collect resident feedback. 1170 KPUG
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Whatcom County farm settled with the state over illegal irrigation when owner Rick Alamwala agreed to pay $15,000 and install telemetric water meters—letting Ecology monitor his blueberry fields west of Sumas to avoid further violations. The agreement comes after previous fines of $20,000 last year and $12,000 in 2023 amid ongoing water management concerns during the drought emergency. KAFE
- ➤ A Whatcom County farm reached a settlement with Ecology over illegal irrigation allegations by agreeing to pay $15,000 without admitting guilt and install telemetric water meters—allowing the agency to monitor the site and avert future violations amid a drought emergency. KISM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Lynden City Council will consider a 0.1% sales tax increase next Monday to fund the criminal justice system—if approved, the measure is expected to generate up to $400,000 in a year and go into effect in January. KISM
- ➤ Whatcom County approved a lease for a severe weather shelter at Lutheran Community Services NW at 925 N Forest St.—operations will begin Nov. 15 when forecasted temperatures trigger the opening and the county will give 48 hours’ notice for up to 60 guests. County Health and Community Services is hiring on call shelter attendants including lead positions. KAFE
