GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ WSDOT announced that overnight lane closures will affect I-5 in Ferndale as crews work to repave and install cable barriers on a 10-mile stretch between Blaine and the Nooksack River — the southbound left lane will close nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Sunday, Oct 12, and the northbound left lane will be closed Monday through Friday until Oct 17. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Department of Health received new funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that extends WIC benefits through the end of October—even though some offices may temporarily close because of the government shutdown. Nearly 5,000 Whatcom County residents used the program last year. KISM
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Tonight the Mariners face the Detroit Tigers in decisive Game 5 with George Kirby starting and first pitch at 5:05 p.m. on KGMI, while Friday Night Lights shows live high school football from Lynden Christian from 3 to 7 p.m.; the Seahawks will travel to Jacksonville for a tough road game later this weekend—each game is key in this busy sports lineup.
