EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washington's special education services remain intact after a federal judge blocked plans to lay off most staff from the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. State Superintendent Christ Reykdal said his office has not seen any threat to the $275 million annual federal funds for local school districts and urged Congress to act before any essential programs are cut—helping secure vital services.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington, along with 22 states, is suing the EPA over cuts to $7 billion in renewable energy funding and the cancellation of the Solar for All program that froze $156 million for solar projects—alleging the decision violates the Administrative Procedure Act and the constitutional separation of powers.  KISM
  • Bellingham Police unveiled a patrol car wrapped in pink and purple to honor breast cancer and domestic violence awareness month — the design also features Lummi language text— and utility rates will rise in January to fund water system upgrades and aid households. City Council will hold public hearings on housing rules on Oct. 20, Nov. 3, and Nov. 17 as residents are urged to clear storm drains while agencies completed a wildfire readiness exercise and plan an open house for a new Bakerview park on Oct. 23.  City of Bellingham

  • This weekend, Whatcom County hosts fall activities including a spooky mystery show at The Upfront Theatre that runs today and Saturday, an interactive detective event at Lynden Heritage Museum starting tomorrow, and a ski gear swap at Bloedel Donovan Park on Friday and Saturday. Family fun continues with Sesame Street Live at Mount Baker Theatre on Saturday at 2 p.m. & a thrash metal concert by D.R.I. at Shakedown on Sunday.  KAFE

  • Tonight at T-Mobile Park, Luis Castillo will start for the Mariners in Game 4 facing Max Scherzer while the Kraken try to bounce back in a game starting at 4:00—these matchups follow a heavy loss yesterday. At home, WWU women's soccer hosts Northwest Nazarene at 7:00 and Friday Night Lights will cover a rivalry match between Sehome and Bellingham tomorrow night—both contests promise exciting local competition.  KISM
