COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City hosted several events and projects with family Halloween fun planned for tomorrow, a Bakerview Park open house held last night, and a quick fix at Mt. Baker Theatre—City Council adopted a Rapid Response Plan for invasive mussels and workers replaced the broken stadium scoreboard. Crews will begin night paving on Monday along several roads and the Bellingham Public Library celebrated its Friends during national Friends of the Library Week. City of Bellingham
- ➤ Flood Awareness Week is held in Sumas to teach residents about flood safety. The forecast shows a few showers today with a high of 62F, and winds from SE at 5 to 10 mph—so locals need to stay ready. Lynden Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Sumas City Council approved a tax change that shifts five acres on Kneuman Road from Open Space Farm and Agriculture to Open Space Land. Public hearings will be held on Oct.27 and Nov.10 — the change will impact local land use planning. Lynden Tribune
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Residents who do not get health insurance through work, a spouse or government programs can sign up during open enrollment starting Nov 1. The Health Benefit Exchange Board approved a 21% premium hike for 2026 due to expiring federal tax credits+80,000 people may drop coverage if the credits are not extended. KAFE
- ➤ The state Department of Health announced Thursday that new federal funding will extend the WIC Nutrition Program—supporting pregnant people, new parents and children under age five—through mid-to-late November amid the ongoing government shutdown. Nearly 5,000 Whatcom County residents received support from the program last year. KAFE

- ➤ Western’s men’s soccer team will host Northwest Nazarene at 7 p.m. at Harrington Field in Bellingham as they try to extend their seven-match unbeaten streak, and the women’s team aims to push their run to 11 wins today at Saint Martin’s.
