COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Loca Mocha owner Nicole Postma started a food pantry in her coffee shop to help Sumas families stressed by food benefits, and the pantry will remain open through the holidays.  Lynden Tribune
  • Corporal Scott Myhre retired after 29 years with the Lynden Police Department and on Nov. 18 he visited Lynden Christian Elementary School—where students toured his cruiser—while the Bellingham Farmers Market asks locals to support its food access programs as government funding for SNAP Market Match will drop in 2026.  Lynden Tribune
  • Nooksack Valley Food Bank was named as one of four beneficiaries of this year’s Readers Care Fund and will receive support to help boost food distribution in Lynden—aiming to improve access to food for local residents.  Lynden Tribune
  • Kaiti Lopez took on the operations manager role at the Ferndale Food Bank in mid-2024 to improve food access for many in the community. She manages daily donations and about 200 volunteers—helping the food bank serve over 8,100 people as local need grows.  KISM
  • Families in Sumas will get a chance to present their Christmas lists to Santa on Dec. 1 at the City Park from 5:30-6:30 p.m.—the Sumas Fire Department will transport Santa so his reindeers can rest.  Lynden Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Dec. 1, the City of Bellingham in partnership with Whatcom County will open a temporary Severe Weather Day Shelter at the Old Lighthouse Mission Drop-In Center on Holly Street for individuals experiencing homelessness during severe cold weather—this shelter will operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. following the County’s nighttime activation if staffing allows—updates are available on shelterstatus.com.  City of Bellingham
  • WSDOT released charts showing heavy traffic is expected during the Thanksgiving holiday week—busy routes include I-5, I-90, and Highway 2. Data averaged from past years indicates congestion from Tacoma to Bellingham, and travelers are advised to review the charts before leaving.  KAFE
  • Bellingham’s Severe Weather Shelter will open this weekend at 925 N. Forest St. on Saturday, Nov. 29 and Sunday, Nov. 30 and may extend to Monday if weather conditions require it; guests will check in from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with check out at 8 a.m. the next morning to access meals and shelter on a first-come, first-served basis.  KAFE
  • On Nov. 20 in Everson, Whatcom County Fire District 14 held an impromptu graduation where nearly 20 people earned EMT certificates after six months of training aimed at boosting community safety — a move that strengthens local emergency response.  Lynden Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Thanksgiving sports highlighted a busy day as NFL games were played today with the Lions hosting the Packers at 10 a.m. on KPUG, the Cowboys hosting the Chiefs, and the Ravens welcoming the Bengals with Joe Burrow returning while regional prep football teams announced All-Conference honors and Mount Baker and Lynden Christian prepare for Saturday’s state playoffs. The Seahawks added Cam Akers and re-signed Myles Gaskins this morning—Jim Mora was hired by Colorado State—and the Kraken hosted the Dallas Stars on Thanksgiving Eve.  KISM
  • The NFL will hold Thanksgiving games where the Lions host the Packers, the Cowboys face the Chiefs, and the Seahawks add Cam Akers and Quandre Diggs as Colorado State names former UW player Jim Mora head coach to lead the Rams in their first Pac-12 season. Whatcom County prep football coaches announced All-Conference teams with state playoff games set to start Saturday and the Kraken will host the Stars on Thanksgiving Eve—highlighting a busy regional sports schedule.  My Bellingham Now
