COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After completing the initial flood cleanup, Whatcom Strong in Whatcom County seeks skilled volunteers (HVAC, electrical, demolition, reconstruction) for the next phase of work on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; volunteers should submit a form on the website to participate.  My Bellingham Now
  • Severe weather shelters will open overnight on Christmas Eve and Day in Bellingham and Ferndale as a high wind watch remains in effect through tonight — Bellingham's N. Forest Street shelter accepts guests from 4 to 8 p.m. and Ferndale's Washington Street shelter from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with the Lighthouse Mission open daily.  My Bellingham Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Just before 5 a.m. on Dec. 22, a home on Jones Road in Sumas caught fire, leaving the property and belongings a total loss—though all seven occupants escaped safely.  Lynden Tribune

  • Woburn Street is now fully open after emergency repairs and Hannegan Road will reopen today through Dec. 28 with a gravel surface and reduced speed limit to support holiday traffic following repair work for underground water damage caused by recent rains.  City of Bellingham

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bloodworks Northwest is urgently asking locals to donate blood, especially Type O negative and platelets, after flooding cut 500 potential donations at drives (including one near Bellis Fair Mall). The nonprofit has over 15 mobile drives in Whatcom and Skagit counties.  KISM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the Seahawks earned six Pro Bowl picks while DK Metcalf faces a two-game suspension for a fan altercation — the Bellingham girls' high school basketball team lost 66-33 to Edmonds-Woodway and Seattle's Kraken secured a 3-1 win.  KISM
