If you work for Comcast in Bellingham, this one's for you. Comcast told the state on Thursday, Oct. 29, that it plans to lay off 159 workers in Washington, and Bellingham is among the affected cities. Comcast hasn't yet told My Bellingham Now how many of the cuts are here.

The roles range from finance analysts and engineers to supervisors and managers, and some people work virtually. Comcast says it's “fundamentally redesigning” itself to compete in a “rapidly changing industry,” and it will work with each affected employee to consider them for open positions.

  • Bellingham site: the regional office on Sequoia Drive
  • Other cities: Bremerton, Everett, Olympia, Puyallup, Redmond, Seattle, Spokane, Vancouver
  • Notice period: at least two months before jobs end
  • Office closures: the filing doesn't say any will close

Comcast's layoffs begin Dec. 31 and continue through late March

  1. Oct. 22Comcast reports third-quarter results and a restructuring charge.
  2. Oct. 29Comcast files its layoff notice with the state Employment Security Department.
  3. Dec. 31The first layoffs take effect.
  4. Mar. 2027Layoffs continue through late March.

The cuts come as broadband slips. Comcast's connectivity-and-platforms revenue fell 2.6% to almost $19.7 billion last quarter as fiber and fixed wireless rivals gain ground.

A Stage 1 burn ban is in effect for the Columbia Valley area near Kendall

If you live near Kendall, think twice before lighting the woodstove. The Northwest Clean Air Agency issued a Stage 1 burn ban on Monday, Nov. 2, for the , effective immediately. The agency says cold, stagnant air is keeping wood smoke from clearing out.

  • Area: Columbia Valley urban growth area, Whatcom County
  • Includes: Peaceful Valley and Paradise Lakes developments
  • Length: no estimate was given for how long it lasts

Stage 1 limits wood burning near Kendall

WhereWhat's allowed
Fireplaces, uncertified stovesNo burning unless it's your only adequate heat
Outdoor burningProhibited, even where not permanently banned
Any woodstove or fireplaceNo visible smoke past a 20-minute startup

Most of the area was at “moderate” air quality Monday afternoon, and some parts were rated “unhealthy”. The agency says air may improve during the day, but smoke will build as temperatures drop and more people light fires.

20 minutesstartup period before visible woodstove smoke isn't allowed

The agency also says to check your chimney 20 minutes after lighting a fire. If it's smoking, take action.

If you must burn for heat, we suggest small, hot fires, and don't let them smolder overnight. Smoke is hardest on children, people with heart and lung problems, and adults 65 and older.

A very strange Halloween indeed.

“I had several adult males and females trick or treating on their own behalf. As I am looking for a little one he says "no it's for me". Anyone else experiencing this? Didn't know how to respond except to hand out candy anyway. 😕🎃👻”

The Wrap

Did you know the building that now houses Elk St. Tavern was once a meat market? For 65 years, the spot on N. State St. was home to a meat market and a sausage and smoked meat factory. It opened in 1902 as the Palace Meat Market and became the Sanitary Meat Market in 1911, and Hans Oberleitner owned it until 1967. Next round's on the sausage.
