If you live near Kendall, think twice before lighting the woodstove. The Northwest Clean Air Agency issued a Stage 1 burn ban on Monday, Nov. 2, for the , effective immediately. The agency says cold, stagnant air is keeping wood smoke from clearing out.

  • Area: Columbia Valley urban growth area, Whatcom County
  • Includes: Peaceful Valley and Paradise Lakes developments
  • Length: no estimate was given for how long it lasts

Stage 1 limits wood burning near Kendall

WhereWhat's allowed
Fireplaces, uncertified stovesNo burning unless it's your only adequate heat
Outdoor burningProhibited, even where not permanently banned
Any woodstove or fireplaceNo visible smoke past a 20-minute startup

Most of the area was at “moderate” air quality Monday afternoon, and some parts were rated “unhealthy”. The agency says air may improve during the day, but smoke will build as temperatures drop and more people light fires.

20 minutesstartup period before visible woodstove smoke isn't allowed

The agency also says to check your chimney 20 minutes after lighting a fire. If it's smoking, take action.

If you must burn for heat, we suggest small, hot fires, and don't let them smolder overnight. Smoke is hardest on children, people with heart and lung problems, and adults 65 and older.
